Friends, humans, maps, globes

People are globes. And friends are maps.

Friends are maps to the globe of our personhood. They touch us at points. No map can cover a whole globe; no friend can capture all of a person’s dimensions. But they all cover parts of the identity, and they juxtapose. If a part is left uncovered, it might weather away. Unless there’s no wind. But the winds of change are always flowing. Friends save our little intricacies from being eroded away by the sands of time. But if there’s a part in us that must change, then no friend must be blocking it. Sometimes, separation is necessary. Pick your friends with care.

Friends are maps. Sometimes we think we need friends to show us the way, to tell us who we are. Sure, it’s easy when a map shows us the way. But we are globes ourselves. Look within; we have all the answers.

Friends are maps. But people are globes. When we try snatching on to them, fitting them to us, we reduce ourselves to flat planes. We have no depth of our own, only what we get from others. We mustn’t shred ourselves that way, crumbling, tearing. We must all be content to be globes — and let all be globes. We’d only touch at points. But we’ll all remain whole.

Let friend be maps. And we’ll be globes.
